Every release of RACE, newest first.

v1.1.6 30 September 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE-Intel.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • Each release includes RACE-Linux-x86_64.tar.gz, which replaces the daily Linux beta build.
  • Looking Glass: with the canvas zoomed out, Command+Z shows the terminal under the pointer at full size on the side of the window that window.looking-glass-side sets.
  • race-mcp --listen serves MCP over HTTP with a bearer token, so an agent on another computer can drive RACE.
  • A terminal with its own accent color takes on a tint of it when you zoom out, and layout.accent-tint sets the zoom range and strength.
  • window.color-space set to display-p3 spreads theme colors over the wider P3 gamut.

Changed

  • An unregistered copy runs as a 14-day trial with no limits, starting the day RACE first runs on the computer.
  • After the trial ends, the terminals you have keep working, and RACE doesn't open new ones.
  • Command+click opens links with any scheme://, and mailto:, tel:, sms:, and magnet: links.
  • Typing into a blinking terminal stops its blink.
  • In a search started from the overview, Enter frames the terminal the way Command+F does.
  • config.toml keeps the defaults you haven't set as comments, so it holds only your choices.
  • Menus, help, and config comments have new wording.

v1.1.5 27 September 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE-Intel.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • race:// links: Copy Link on the menu of a terminal, group, picture, or label, and Copy Canvas Link on the canvas menu, copy a link that switches to the canvas and frames the element the way Focus Mode does.
  • The MCP tools and race-control list each element and canvas with its race:// link.
  • After Command+H, Command+J, Command+K, or Command+L moves focus, the opposite shortcut moves it back.

Changed

  • Theme preview cards show each theme on a real scene with real terminal text, and they're smaller, so more of them fit.
  • A group's body uses the color you pick for it.
  • A blinking terminal switches its border and name tab between its accent color and no color.
  • Saving the session re-encodes only the terminals whose scrollback changed, and stores each terminal's history and each picture in its own file next to session.bin.

v1.1.4 24 September 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE-Intel.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • Each release includes RACE-Intel.dmg, a disk image for Intel-based Macs.
  • race-control blink and the MCP tool race_blink_terminal make a terminal's border blink until you click it.
  • The target in-group:<label> selects every terminal in a group in race-control and the MCP tools, and race-control members lists them.
  • The theme picker filters themes as you type.

Changed

  • Theme preview cards show the full palette, and the canvas preview shows the part of the canvas that's in view.
  • MCP tools reject arguments they don't recognize.

v1.1.3 18 September 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • Command+Backspace clears a terminal's name, highlight color, important mark, and inactivity monitor.

Changed

  • Command+[ and Command+] zoom out only as far as needed to show a terminal that's too big for the view, and end where they started.

Fixed

  • Text fields and pop-ups accept characters typed with an Option key that keyboard.altgr reserves.
  • Title text on a colored border stays readable.
  • On X11, a window that the window manager takes out of full screen reopens as a window.

v1.1.2 15 September 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • window.drag-key sets the modifier key you hold to move terminals, groups, and labels and to open links. window.drag-gesture-double-tap sets the key you double-tap to pan the canvas. Both default to Command on macOS and Alt on Linux.
  • race-control update-image replaces the picture in an existing frame, and add-image reads a picture from standard input.

Changed

  • When no terminal is selected, the mouse wheel zooms the canvas and a two-finger trackpad swipe pans it. To make the wheel pan too, set scroll.wheel-action = "pan".
  • Command+/ matches group labels and zooms to the group.
  • Mirrors on another canvas keep their own size and scale, and you can resize any mirror from its corners.
  • If you assign one shortcut to two actions under [keyboard.shortcuts], the later action gets it.
  • On Linux, copy and paste default to Ctrl+Shift+C and Ctrl+Shift+V, and you submit the Register box with Ctrl+Enter.

Fixed

  • Closing a terminal whose shell ignores the hangup signal ends the shell, along with its host process and socket.
  • Text fields paste with the paste shortcut you configure.
  • The canvas pans on systems that can't lock the pointer, such as X11.

v1.1.1 10 September 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • You can change every shortcut. keyboard.prefix sets the key that shortcuts start with, and [keyboard.shortcuts] in config.toml binds one shortcut to each action. Changes apply when you save the file, and the help overlay shows the current bindings.
  • A Linux build, RACE-Linux-x86_64.tar.gz, is available with the macOS downloads and includes a desktop launcher and an install script. Shortcuts use the Super key. The clipboard, file drops, and picture drops work on Wayland and X11, and the file picker uses zenity or kdialog.
  • Command+Comma and Command+Period zoom the canvas out and in around the focused terminal and move it toward the center of the view.
  • The MCP tools and race-control can mark terminals as important and step through them, create portals and labels, reorder canvases, copy and paste, and add a picture from a file path.

Changed

  • Command+/ searches titles and shows the title tiles. Command+Control+/ also searches screen text, and either shortcut switches the open search box.
  • Command+[ and Command+] go to important terminals in the order you marked them, and pan without zooming.
  • The highlight color picker moves from Command+G to Command+B.
  • On a canvas that isn't moving, RACE redraws only the terminals whose output changed, and draws fast shell output at a steady rate.
  • If the font-family you set isn't installed, RACE uses an installed monospace font and prints a warning to standard error.

Fixed

  • Focus that a shortcut, scroll, or control request moves stays put until the pointer moves window.focus-follows-mouse-threshold points (24 by default).

v1.1.0 8 September 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • Portals: Command+M on a selected group frame opens a copy of the group on another canvas, with a mirror of every terminal in it. Click the portal's badge to go to the original.
  • Command+E marks the focused terminal as important and adds a badge. Command+[ and Command+] step through the marked terminals and center each one.
  • Move to Canvas, on the border menu or with Command+Shift+M, sends a terminal, mirror, picture, label, or group frame to another canvas. It's placed in open space near the center of that canvas's view, and the view pans to it without switching canvases.
  • You can reorder canvas tabs by dragging them in the sidebar.
  • On first launch, RACE asks whether terminals should keep running after RACE quits, using RACE's own host process or dtach, and saves your answer as terminal.persistence.backend.
  • scroll.zoom-multiplier sets how far Command+scroll and Control+scroll zoom the canvas.

Changed

  • RACE merges config.toml with the default settings every time it starts. Every setting appears with its documentation. Your values and your own # comments stay as you wrote them, and a setting you changed shows the default value on a #: line above it. RACE rewrites lines that start with ##: or #:, keeps unknown keys and reports them to standard error, and doesn't start if a value has the wrong type. RACE deletes the config.default.toml file that earlier builds wrote.
  • During a zoom gesture, each frame scales what the windows last drew, and RACE redraws the text 10 times a second.
  • The pin, mirror, portal, and important badges are single glyphs the size of the window title.
  • A group frame is highlighted when focus leaves every terminal in it.
  • window.width and window.height are removed from config.toml. The window opens at the size saved in the session.

v1.0.39 6 September 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • Command+/ opens a search box over the canvas that finds terminals by name or by screen text. Tab and Shift+Tab step through the matches, and Esc restores the view. search-position places the box at the center, top, or bottom.
  • layout.border in config.toml sets the thickness of a terminal's border in points. The border grows inward.
  • The MCP tools and race-ctl accept pid:N for the terminal that a process runs in, and caller for the terminal that the client itself runs in.

Changed

  • The MCP control socket is on by default, and only its owner can read it. Anything that can reach the socket can type into your shells. To turn it off, set enabled = false under [mcp].
  • Group frames tint the canvas with their own highlight color, and a frame without one uses the canvas color.
  • A group is highlighted 300 ms after the pointer enters it.
  • Clicking a mirror's corner mark centers the terminal it mirrors.

Fixed

  • Directional focus moves to the neighboring window, not to a window under the focused one.
  • Emoji and double-width characters take their full column width in window names and other text fields.
  • PTY host processes stop when you remove the RACE app.

v1.0.38 2 September 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • You can set scroll speed in config.toml: terminal-multiplier for a terminal's scrollback and canvas-multiplier for panning the canvas.
  • race_find_pid and race-ctl find-pid return the terminal that a process runs in.

Changed

  • Terminals, canvases, groups, pictures, and labels share one numbering sequence, so a number identifies exactly one of them. The MCP tools and race-ctl accept a number wherever they accept a target, and accept a list of targets in one call. RACE renumbers sessions saved by earlier versions when it loads them, and terminals keep their numbers.

Fixed

  • Choosing Image from a border menu opens the file picker without closing RACE.
  • Arrow keys follow the app's cursor-key mode, and character keys reach apps that request every key as an escape sequence.
  • Command shortcuts don't send the unmodified key to the terminal.

v1.0.37 1 September 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • On first run, RACE opens a canvas of three terminals, zoomed out, with the RACE logo and gesture tips.
  • Command+M creates a mirror of a terminal 10 points down and to the right. Command+click a mirror's icon to close it and center the original.
  • Command+G opens the highlight color picker for a selected group.

v1.0.36 30 August 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Changed

  • Text you type in a terminal appears one refresh sooner.

v1.0.35 30 August 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • You can drag files and pictures in from another app. Drop them on a terminal to type their paths, or on the canvas to place the pictures where you drop them.

Fixed

  • Pinned windows appear on top of labels and receive the click where they overlap.

v1.0.34 28 August 2026

RACE.dmg sha256 RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • A disk image, RACE.dmg, is available to download with the archive.

Fixed

  • Various bug fixes.

v1.0.29 27 August 2026

RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • You can install RACE with Homebrew by running brew install --cask exlee/tap/race, which also adds race-mcp to your path.

v1.0.27 27 August 2026

RACE.zip sha256

Fixed

  • A selection that starts in the padding next to the grid includes the character at that edge.

v1.0.24 27 August 2026

RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • race-control controls RACE from a shell over the control socket, and is included in the app bundle next to race-mcp.
  • race-control prints columns to standard output, or the raw response with --json, and exits with 0 for success, 1 for refused, and 2 for unreachable.
  • The daily update check and a one-time report on first launch include a random installation ID. To turn this off, set telemetry = false in config.toml.

Changed

  • A new terminal starts in the working directory of the last terminal on that canvas, or where RACE started.
  • Command+O animates to the overview.

v1.0.19 26 August 2026

RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • The About box shows whether RACE has Full Disk Access and opens the System Settings pane.
  • A group's menu includes the New commands, and New Label opens where you click.

Changed

  • A group moves everything inside its frame, and Command+F frames all of it.
  • Items added through the control socket appear without taking focus.

Fixed

  • RACE saves the session at least every 10 seconds while terminals keep printing.

v1.0.15 24 August 2026

RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • Text labels: multiline and resizable, moved with Command+drag, edited with a double-click, and drawn as windows with their own accent color and theme, on top of everything else on the canvas.
  • A label on a group frame moves with the frame.

Changed

  • A group moves the pictures on it, which appear above the frame.
  • The canvas menu groups its create commands under a New heading.
  • The canvas theme tile that inherits the app theme shows the theme's swatch and name.

Fixed

  • Keystrokes sent through the control protocol use the same kitty encoding as the keyboard.
  • Alt+Shift and other modifier combinations work.
  • A scroll gesture stays on the terminal where it started while the pointer doesn't move.
  • A directional focus jump doesn't move further sideways than in the direction you chose.
  • The window title falls back to the app name, so screen capture tools list the window.

v1.0.14 22 August 2026

RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • More than 600 built-in themes, including the curated set and the full iTerm2-Color-Schemes collection, under Set Theme on a terminal border.
  • Put your own themes in the themes folder next to the configuration file, one Alacritty TOML file each. A file with the same name as a built-in theme replaces it.
  • Alt+drag on an empty part of the canvas to start a new group.

Changed

  • Glyphs are sharper at uneven sizes.
  • The app icon is redesigned.

v1.0.12 22 August 2026

RACE.zip sha256

Changed

  • You can open five terminals without a license.
  • The canvas stops redrawing while the window is off screen.

v1.0.11 21 August 2026

RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • Focus mode animates when you enter and leave it. You can set the duration and zoom factor.
  • You can set which corner a terminal's name tab attaches to, and whether it's inside or outside the window.

Changed

  • Zooming out exits focus mode.
  • Closing a window focuses the window whose center is closest.
  • Scrolling one terminal on a 4K canvas of nine takes 4.8 ms per frame instead of 8.0 ms.

Fixed

  • Restoring a terminal restores every mode a program set, including the modes it turned off.

v1.0.10 21 August 2026

RACE.zip sha256

Fixed

  • The pointer stays free when you press a shortcut such as Command+O during the double-Command hold pan gesture.

v1.0.9 20 August 2026

RACE.zip sha256

Added

  • The MCP tools cover font size, canvas view and zoom, focus mode, groups, mirrors, pinning, the sidebar, and images.
  • The About box links to this changelog.

Changed

  • In built-in themes, body text has a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 and ANSI colors at least 3:1. Colors that already meet the ratio don't change.

v1.0.7 20 August 2026

  • Terminal modes that an app set are restored after a restart.

v1.0.0 19 August 2026

RACE.zip sha256

First public release.

Added

  • An infinite, zoomable canvas of terminals and images that you can place, drag, resize, and group, with alignment guides and snapping.
  • Pan by holding Command or with a double-Command hold. Command+O fits everything, Command+I centers the focused terminal, and Command+F turns focus mode on or off.
  • Multiple canvases with a resizable sidebar, a naming overlay, and a working directory for each canvas.
  • Terminal groups: a dashed, labeled frame that moves, focuses, and renames its terminals together.
  • Mirrors: a second live view of a terminal that you can scale by dragging a corner, with Send to Canvas.
  • Pinning (Command+P) fixes a terminal to a position on the screen, and Superpin (Command+Shift+P) makes the pin follow the canvas. Both keep the zoom level they were created at.
  • Sessions, including scrollback and the visible screen, are restored after you quit.
  • Kitty keyboard protocol, full key encoding including function keys, and a Shift+Enter that apps can tell apart from Enter.
  • Scrollback navigation with Home, End, Page Up, and Page Down when no app has taken the keyboard.
  • Command+click opens links. Selection, clipboard, and mouse reporting.
  • Color emoji and box-drawing glyphs fill their cells, with system font fallback loaded as needed.

  • A help overlay with keyboard shortcuts (Command+?).
  • A notarized macOS app bundle.
  • An MCP control socket in RACE and a bundled race-mcp binary, so agents can control the canvas.
  • Licensing with a free tier, certificate-verified licenses, daily revocation and update checks, and an About box that shows the build and license status.
